Britannia Joins the Induction Club

With typical aplomb, Britannia have announced the launch of six new models with induction hobs. The Blackpool-based company joins Stoves, Rangemaster and Falcon in offering induction in the range cooker format, but have set a new standard by including six induction zones, against Stoves’ four and Rangemaster/Falcon’s five zones. Available to order on Rangecookers.co.uk from late September.

As an extra incentive Britannia are making the transition to induction easier by giving away a very nice Le Creuset cookware set with every range cooker (
see feature). Can’t be bad.

The new models are available in Sigma, Dynasty and Classic guises, in XG (four cavity) and standard (two cavity) formats, with all the usual colour options, and feature:

• Boost function on all 6 zones - will boil two pints of water in 5 minutes (gas 9 mins; ceramic 11 mins).
• Auto Heat-up - gives an initial boost to bring the pan to temperature.
• Child Lock - although the hotplate does not get hot, this avoids accidental switch-on.
• Residual heat indicators - shows when residual heat conducted from the pan to the glass is present.
• Anti-overheat - powers the zone down automatically if pan overheats.
• Safety Switch-off - switches the hob off if it exceeds the pre-set maximum operating time.

What we think: Induction is very much up-and-coming in the range cooker market, offering as it does excellent performance, energy efficiency and ease of use. Britannia have done well to enter the market with a six-zone hotplate, and this should go down very well with their discerning customer base.
