Five Things Every Kitchen Needs
A well-designed kitchen isn't necessarily about filling the room with appliances. It's about choosing the pieces that genuinely make the space work better, whether that means giving yourself more room to cook, keeping everyday ingredients organised or making sure the kitchen remains comfortable when dinner is in full swing.
While every home is different, there are a few appliances that can form the foundations of a particularly hardworking kitchen. From the range cooker at the centre of the room to refrigeration that quietly keeps everything in order, these are five additions we think are well worth considering when planning a new kitchen...
1. A Range Cooker
For many kitchens, the range cooker is the natural place to begin.
Bringing the hob and ovens together in one substantial appliance, a range cooker creates a dedicated cooking area without the need to distribute everything around the room. It can also add considerably more cooking space than a conventional freestanding cooker, making it easier to have several dishes underway at once.
The format has evolved enormously, too. A range cooker no longer means choosing between a handful of traditional designs. Contemporary models sit just as comfortably in streamlined modern kitchens, while different widths, fuel types, oven configurations and hob layouts make it possible to choose something that works around the way you actually cook.
Induction has become an increasingly important part of the range cooker market, providing responsive hob cooking alongside generous oven capacity. Gas and dual fuel models remain an option for those who prefer cooking over a flame, whilst there are also a number of features included such as dedicated grills, multifunction ovens, slow cook settings, steam functions and specialist hob zones.
Then there is the visual side. Because of its size and position with the cabinetry, a range cooker has the ability to anchor an entire kitchen design. Stainless steel can blend naturally with other appliances, darker finishes can create definition against cabinets, while coloured models allow the cooker to become a much more deliberate part of the scheme.

2. Effective Cooker Hood Extraction
The cooker may take centre stage, but good extraction is one of the details that can make the biggest difference to how a kitchen feels day to day.
Cooking naturally produces steam, grease, heat and odours, especially when several pans or ovens are being used at once. A well-chosen cooker hood helps manage all of this before to settle around the kitchen.
This becomes really important in open-plan spaces, where the kitchen may sit alongside dining and living areas. A cooker hood can help prevent cooking smells travelling throughout the room whilst also dealing with moisture and airborne grease closer to its source.
The hood itself can become part of the kitchen design or almost disappear completely. Statement chimney hoods suit kitchens where the cooking area is intended to be a focal point, while integrated models can be concealed within cabinetry for a quieter appearance. Ceiling extraction and venting hobs offer further alternatives where sightlines are particularly important.
When choosing one, it is worth thinking beyond appearance. The width of the cooking area, extraction performance, noise levels and whether the hood will operate through ducting or recirculation can all affect how suitable it is for a specific kitchen.
It may not be the first appliance you think about, but it is certainly one that you notice when it isn't doing its job properly.

3. Refrigeration That Works Around Your Kitchen
Refrigeration is another area where getting your proportions right can transform the way a kitchen functions.
Rather than automatically choosing the largest refrigerator available, it is worth considering what you regularly store, how often you shop and how much freezer space your household genuinely uses. A carefully chosen fridge or freezer space can provide plenty of capacity without unnecessarily taking over valuable kitchen space.
For some homes, a freestanding fridge freezer offers the ideal balance. Others may benefit from a larger French-door or multi-door design, particularly where fresh food storage is the priority. Integrated refrigeration, meanwhile, can sit discreetly behind kitchen cabinetry and allow the surrounding furniture to remain visually uninterrupted.
Internal organisation is just as important as the dimensions on the outside. Flexible shelving, dedicated fresh-food drawers and intelligently divided freezer compartments can make everyday ingredients easier to see and access, reducing the likelihood of food disappearing unnoticed at the back of the fridge.
Modern refrigeration also places much greater emphasis on maintaining consistent conditions for different types of food. Temperature management and dedicated storage zones can help keep fresh produce, dairy and other ingredients at their best for longer.
A refrigerator may spend most of its life quietly working in the background, but choosing the right one can have a surprisingly noticeable impact on the kitchen.

4. Built In Cooking Extras
A range cooker may already provide plenty of oven capacity, but there are times when an additional cooking appliance can make a kitchen work even harder.
For larger kitchens, enthusiastic cooks or households that regularly entertain, an extra oven can provide another useful cooking space where the main ovens are already occupied. It is particularly helpful when preparing several dishes that require different temperatures, while a smaller cavity can also be convenient for everyday meals when you don't need the full capacity of range cooker.
The choice extends beyond conventional ovens too. Combination microwave ovens, steam ovens and other specialist appliances (even a built in coffee machine) can sit alongside the main cooker and introduce different cooking methods without changing the actual range cooker configuration.
Positioning these appliances at eye level can also create a separate working area within the kitchen, making smaller dishes easier to check and helping to spread cooking tasks across the room.

5. A Wine Cooler
Once considered a specialist appliance, the wine cooler has become an increasingly familiar sight in modern kitchens.
Part of its appeal is that it provides a dedicated environment for bottles that might otherwise occupy valuable refrigerator or cupboard space. Rather than rearranging shelves every time you want to chill several bottles, everything has its own place.
Temperature control is the real advantage. Wine coolers are designed specifically around bottle storage, with selected models offering separate temperature zones so different wines can be kept under conditions better suited to them.
They can also be incorporated surprisingly easily into a kitchen layout. Slim undercounter models are ideal where space is limited, while larger units can sit alongside refrigeration or within a bank of cabinetry. Depending on the kitchen, a wine cooler can either become a subtle integrated detail or something intentionally put on display.
And despite the name, the space doesn't necessarily have to be reserved for a collection of fine wines. For households that entertain regularly, having dedicated chilled storage for bottles can simply free up the main refrigerator and make drinks easier to organise.

Creating a Kitchen That Works For You
There is no universal formula for the perfect kitchen. A household that cooks for a large family every evening will need something very different from a smaller home where entertaining at weekends is the priority.
That is why the best kitchen plans begin with how the room will actually be used.
Individually, each appliance has a fairly straightforward job. Chosen together, however, they can create a kitchen that feels considerably more organised, capable and enjoyable to use.
